For the first time during VIV Russia 2004 exhibitionthe new concept “From Feed to Meet” was realized. It means that all the aspects from the equipment for food-manufacturing industry, feed for animals, veterinary products and stockbreeding to the equipment for farming, slaughter, meat and egg manufacturing, ingredients and final meat products were presented here. The tremendous interest in the topic chosen for the forum is confirmed by the presence of multiple internal and foreign exhibitors. Over 200 companies from 23 counties: Russia, CIS, North and South America, Europe and Asia have presented their products and services on the area of 10 000 square meters. The wide-ranging program of seminars on the most relevant topics involving Russian and foreign specialists will take place within the exhibition. The organizers of the forum indicated that the meat industry in Russia has bright perspectives and expressed their hope for the productive work in the forum for all of its participants.

The conference “Stockbreeding and Poultry Raising. Safety and Quality – the Future of the Industry.”

The most important issues for the industry connected with Russian meat and poultry market perspectives and food-manufacturing companies under contemporary conditions were discussed. In their report “Meat Industry in Russia: Condition and Main Trends of Development”, V. G. Kaishev and V. V. Doykov (the Ministry of Agriculture of RF) emphasized that in last 5 years the reversal from recession to recovery economy took place in the country. Annually both industrial and agricultural production is increasing resulting in the increase of real financial benefits of the population. Generally the economic situation is turning to better, and now we can speak about this as a stable tendency. The main economic and social rates for the year 2003 indicate significant positive changes in Russian economy. For example, in comparison with the year 2003, industrial and agricultural production increased for 7 and 1,5 % respectively.

In recent 3 years the positive changes connected with recreation and strengthening of the production potential and the increase of production of main kinds of food were observed in food and process industries. In 2003 the production index was 5,1%. The realization of livestock and poultry in the enterprises of all categories (in deadweight) for the last 4 years increased from 4,31 million tons in 1999 to 4,9 million tons in 2003 (or 13,7%). In the private farms the average meat production was stable (about 2,58 million tons per year). The percentage of private farms in the total meat production in the country increased from 25% in 1990 to 54% in 2003.

Last year the farm meat production was 0,10 million tons and was generally consumptive. Their percentage in the total meat production in the country was 2,2%. It may be said that farming stockbreeding was not highly developed during the whole period of market reforms. Recently their number got stable (263,9 thousand).

In 2002-2003 the percentage of swine and poultry in the total production increased due to increase of their slaughter contingent. In agricultural enterprises the percentage of the realized cattle for slaughter in 2003 was 37,5% (in 2002 - 40,3%), pigs - 25,6% (24,5%), poultry – 35% (33,7%).

While the stock of cattle continuously decrease (for 1,5 million heads in 2003 or for 5,7 % in comparison with 2002) the stock of pigs is increasing in enterprises of all categories. The number of sheep and goats, which was 16,2 million heads in 2003 or 101,1% (in comparison with the year 2002), increase. In the structure of stock in the private enterprises the cattle is 43%, pigs – 47%, sheep and goats – 61%.

It is necessary to indicate that in spite of the recent increase of most kinds of food production, the quantative rates of food output in comparison with the year of 1990 are still at the level of 30-60%. The rate of increase of production for the last 4 years is not in line with the rate of decrease in 1990s. Meat industry is far from the production achieved in 1990. Its reconstruction will take the years of routine, difficult and constructive work aimed at final result – the creation of effective market food system.

In his report “Some Results of the Development of Meat Industry in RF in 1994-2003”, M. L. Mamikonyan, president of Meat Union of RF, summarized the general trends and the condition of meat and raw material market and basic factors influencing the prices for raw materials and the percentage of consuming of different kinds of meat. He indicated that in recent 10 years livestock and pigs decreased for 40%. However, the analysis of the market suggests the consumption of poultry may increase in next 5-10 years up to 4,5-5,5 million tons at total meat market increase up to 10 million tons.

The market of beef would be represented by home production mostly, and import will not exceed 200 000 tons per year, including from 100 to 150 thousand tons of Ukrainian and Belarus import.

The market of pork in 2000 was represented by 1 700 000 tons of production including 1,5 million tons of Russian production. Russia needs the import of no more than 200-300 thousand tons of pork. These 200 thousand tons consist mostly of back fat and hog-skin for plants.

The present-day political processes in RF will result, on the reporter’s opinion, in keeping to the laws, including economic ones, protecting the market from administrative, price and other forms of destruction. This reform will result in intensive development of poultry raising, pig breeding, reconstruction of pasture stockbreeding for beef production. That is why, all the parties interested in transparent and predictable Russian market and its potential integration into the world trade space must require the immediate solution on the issue of complete abolishment of European Community subsidies for all kinds of meat products. It means that the allocation of meat import introduced in RF in 2003 is a required but not sufficient protective measure from the continuous expansion of meat with the subsidized cost. The allocation holds back the market price changes, and the meat import in RF will have administrative and not liberal market features for some years.

In his report, V. N. Sharnin, director-general of Association “ROSSVINOPROM”, discussed the problems of pig breeding, main tasks of the Association and the ways of solution of the most important problems of the industry. G. A. Bobylyova, director-general of “ROSPTITSESOYUZ”, introduced to the participants of the conference the industry program of poultry raising development for 2005-2007 and for the period up to 2010. The main objective of the program is creation of critical economic, organizational and financial conditions for the reconstruction and dynamic accretion of production potential, the increase of industry performance, the development of poultry market and providing the independence of home market from the import of poultry products. As the result of realization of the program in RF in 2007 the production of 2,5 million tons of poultry in the enterprises of all kinds is planned, including 1,8 million tons in live weight in poultry raising enterprises (the increase versus 2003 will be 65%). The production of eggs in the enterprises of all kinds will be 38 billion, including 28 billion in poultry raising enterprises or 4% versus 2003. The consumption of poultry in 2007 will be 10 kg of deadweight and 270 eggs per capita, and in 2010 it will be 15 kg and 320 respectively.

L. A. Abramova, the worker of “ROSPTITSESOYUZ” made the detailed report on the issues of safety and quality of poultry products.

Several reports were dedicated to the contemporary method of pig breeding. “Present-day Pig Farm. The Increase of Productivity of our Enterprise” is the title of the report of Saren Christensen and Julius Pudzivelis, the specialist of ACO Funki A/S Company (Denmark), who presented the effective method of pig farm management.

Paul Thomson and Alexander Richmann of Skiold Echberg A/S Company (Denmark) described the composition of non-granulated feed for pigs, and the intellectual management of pig breeding, which provides fast reaction to any changes in consumption of feed and liquid by pigs. This systems helps to be up to speed with the latest events in pig breeding and also to optimize the production.

In his report “Commercial Pig Breeding”, Jim Donaldson, president of Donaldson International Livestock Ltd. (Canada), listed the basic elements of pig breeder’s work. They are: animal themselves (their genetics), feed (quantity, quality, price), health (disease prevention and treatment), and also pig farm itself and management system. The reporter presented to the specialist the Canadian program of pig breeding, basic breeds, achievements in genetics, which allows decreasing the cost of production. The company is ready to provide foreign manufacturers with complete package of services in pig breeding.

N. M. Rekhtman, technical director of “Neoforce” Company (Belarus Republic), described in his report the peculiarities of modification of Russian pig breeding complexes and the application of new method of dung removal.

Conference Hall 2

The conference in the second hall of “Crocus Expo” was open with the reports dedicated to the rules of effective business.

“Brand-Construction and Packing in Meat and Sausage Industry” is the topic of Larisa Klevtsova of Capital Research Group (NEIMS). The Chief of Board of “Lanit” Holding described the experience of management system implementation at meat-preserving factory.

Meyn Food Processing Technology B.V. (the Netherlands) is one of the innovators and leaders in poultry processing. Its representative, Andrey Sidorov, made the report on the state of Russian poultry raising in the context of world tendencies.

The reporter emphasized that the statistics of poultry consumption for the last 10 and 30 years indicates the tendency to the increased consumption all over the world. And Russia is not an exception here; it is not only one of the biggest importers, but also an exporter. “We think,” said Sidorov, “that Russian Federation is a developing market. The present-day tendencies indicate the future increase of poultry raising investment”. In 2005, according to Meyn’s prognosis, poultry production will increase for 79% versus 2002.

Oksana Mikhailovskaya, veterinary of Hi-Line International (USA) in her report “Bird Health” described the most common diseases of birds: infection bronchitis and Newcastle’s disease. These diseases are highly dangerous and cause big mortality, but Hi-Line specialists know how to detect the viruses and overcome dangerous diseases. They think that correct vaccination is most effective.

Another reporter of Finnish Company Suomеn Renu introduced a new product “Progut”, which attracted attention of feed suppliers as it improves the growth and feed conversion of the animals. The developers state that the mechanism of this component is studied completely and “Progut” can replace antibiotics. Moreover it promote the immunity in the guts and prevents diseases. Tatyana Sivelkaeva of the firm “Protein, Technologies, Ingredients”, described the ways to preserve organoleptic characteristics, vendibility and quality of meat by means of specific ingredients. This company is one of the biggest suppliers of the ingredients for food industry in Russia.
